What do we pass on?
In each of our lifetimes, mother figures innately instill in us their legacy. Through every heirloom—whether it be their native language, a family recipe, their artistry, or a cherished vintage ring—they guide us to where we’re supposed to be, shaping our past, present, and future. As we journey through life, we realize that we are reflections of those who raised us. Just as they guide us, we teach and inspire, exchanging lessons for generations to come.
This year, we’re honoring heirlooms of all kinds, and hosting intimate conversations with people from all walks of life.
Meet our first feature—London based Cypriot textile and knitwear designer Alex Hadjikyriacou.
Alex was raised in Cyprus with a close-knit family. Her mother, an architect and textile designer, passed on her passion for creativity and craftsmanship. Alex faced challenges with dyslexia from a young age, and her mother helped her navigate language in innovative ways. As she matured, Alex spent time in her mother's studio, exploring textiles and gaining hands-on experience in the family trade.
Our conversation with Alex revealed how her mother's artistry and entrepreneurial spirit have shaped her path as a designer.
Kinn: We’re so inspired by your mom’s impact on your life— can you tell us your happiest memory with her?
Alex: Oh yes, walking our dogs on our favorite beach back home in Cyprus.
Kinn: That sounds so serene. What is the best advice your mom has given to you?
Alex: Hmmm, the best advice my mom has given me is—The most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself.
Kinn: What is something that has been passed down to you?
Alex: Knowledge on how to make your creative work into your livelihood. Believe in yourself in a way that you can work hard in doing what you believe in.
What will you pass on?
